E. L. & Pauline D. Kilgore Lyceum Presents John Archibald
The E. L. and Pauline D. Kilgore Lyceum brings another notable Alabamian and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, John Archibald, to Oneonta's Little Brick Church on Thursday, April 11, 2024, for its ninth annual presentation. In its 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Commentary, the awarding committee cited the Alabama journalist "for lyrical and courageous commentary that is rooted in Alabama but has a national resonance."
In March 2021, Alfred Knopf Publishing released Archibald's "Shaking the Gates of Hell: A Search for Family and Truth in the Wake of the Civil Rights Resolution." In a review of the book, Joseph Barbato labeled the work "an effecting blend of memoir and history."
A direct descendent of nearly 300 years of Christian ministers, Archibald struggles in his book to resolve his issues with his regarded Methodist minister father's personal effects for Civil Rights and acceptance of the LBGTQ community with his failure to speak frequently and more overtly of such from his pulpits.
The event is free and the public is welcome to attend.
